There used to be a "Home Page Redirection" plugin (https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/system-nomad/) that might have suited this purpose.
This one would be perfect I think for your purpose but it's Joomla 3 only unfortunately.
I don't recall any similar ones on the JED (at least I haven't found any that do the exact same thing as 'Nomad'.)
